Marjory L. Puckey, 94, of Damariscotta, passed away on the morning of Jan. 27 at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Facility in Damariscotta, where she had resided for the past four years. Born on May 16, 1916 in Jefferson, she was the daughter of Herbert G. and Helen (Blanchard) Leadbeater.
She grew up in Jefferson and graduated from Lincoln Academy as part of the class of 1933. She later graduated from St. Barnabas School of Nursing in Portland.
In 1938, she married John A. Puckey in Newton, Mass. The couple made their home in Newcastle. Marge worked as a RN at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta as well in private care.
She and her husband John were avid travelers and bridge players. Marge was also a very dedicated golf player.
After the illness and death of her husband in 1968, she took over his oil company and successfully owned and operated the John A. Puckey Oil Co. until her retirement in 2005.
She was on the board of the Skidompha Public Library as well as the Wawenock Country Club.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; and brother, Herb Leadbeater.
She is survived by her only son, John S. “Jack” Puckey and wife Priscilla of Newcastle; granddaughters, Leah Puckey and husband David Cowan of New Harbor and Sonya Verney of Bristol; great-grandsons, Brett John Cowan and Chad David Cowan of New Harbor; as well as eight nieces and nephews.
Time of visitation 2-3 p.m., Sat., Feb. 5 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Service will follow at 3 p.m. She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Hillside Cemetery in the spring.
