Harlan Barter Lewis, 88, of Boothbay, died Feb. 10 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. He was born April 10, 1924 in Boothbay to Wendell and Mabel Barter Lewis. Harlan attended local schools. He served as a Carpenter’s Mate Second Class in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
After the war Harlan worked as a carpenter at Sample’s Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor. He also helped build the original Boothbay Baptist Church with Charlie Reed. In the winter months he would work as a carpenter and in the summer he worked as a worm dealer, shipping worms all over the world.
He was a member of the Boothbay Fire Department and Bayview Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He enjoyed working with his hands, building things and working on outboard motors.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Bartik Lewis; brothers, Elmer and Roland Lewis; sister, Myrtle Pickard; sisters-in-law, Grace and Barbara Lewis; and daughter-in-law, Beverly Ann Lewis.
He is survived by sons, Wendell Lewis and wife Sheila of Boothbay, and David Lewis of Clovis, Cal.; daughters, Ruth Michaud and husband Bob of Naples, and Marie Andrews and husband Dennis of Boothbay; brothers, Stanley “Swing” Lewis of Boothbay, Alfred Lewis of Boothbay, and Donald Lewis of Elkton, Md.; sister, Jessie Steeves of Boothbay; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Tues., Feb. 14 with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Funeral 1 p.m., Wed., Feb. 15 also at the funeral home. Al Roberts will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
