Harold A. Davis, 87, of Bristol, passed away at his home on Nov. 6. Born in Lowell, Mass. on Jan. 18, 1923, he was the son of Malcolm and Marie (Gravballe) Davis.
Harold moved to Bristol early in his life and attended Bristol schools, graduating from Bristol High School. While attending school as a boy in Bristol Mills, he got to play baseball with Babe Ruth, who stopped by the school during an annual hunting trip.
After high school, he started working at Bath Iron Works. He worked there until he was drafted by the U.S. Army during WWII. He spent all of his time in the Pacific during the war. He was stationed in Guam, and fought on Iwo Jima. After the war, he returned to Bristol and married Nancy Roberts in 1953.
Harold had many jobs in his life, some of which had him working in the woods, hauling gravel, painting houses and mowing lawns as well as being a mason tender. He also worked for several years at Hilltop Market, a job he loved as it allowed him to talk and share stories with many people.
He loved to be outdoors, whether it was mowing, gardening or going to the shore in Round Pond. He was an avid reader and finished a book just days before his death. He even once read the encyclopedia from A to Z.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother; two sisters; wife Nancy; and son-in-law, Kenneth Crockett.
He is survived by three children, Rudy Davis wife Sheylah and four step-grandchildren of Rangeley, Evelyn Crockett of Bristol and Harold Davis Jr. of Damariscotta; grandchildren, Kirk Crockett, Troy Crockett and Kelli Craig and husband Josh, all of Bristol; and great-grandchildren who lit up his life, Isaac, Chase, Jacob and Braxton.
