Harold Kenneth Benner, 66, of Waldoboro, died suddenly as a result of an automobile accident on June 4.
Harold was born on Sept. 14, 1942 to Norman F. Benner and Ella O. (Moody) Benner. He was a graduate of Waldoboro High School and attended the University of Maine, Orono, for a year. He left the University to join the Air Force, and served from 1961 to 1964 as a Core man until his honorable discharge from the service.
After his military discharge he met the love if his life, Nancy Merril. Soon after, they were married and made their home in Waldoboro, and were married for 42 years. Harold went to work at Bath Iron Works, and ended his career there after 30 years, tallying 15 years in the Electric Shop as an assistant foreman. He retired from BIW in 1993. But Harold never really “retired,” going on to work part time at Hannaford in Waldoboro as well as starting and caring for a growing apple tree farm.
In his spare time Harold was also a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism (re-creating people living in the Middle Ages) and for several years he held Medieval Fairs at his residence. But, the real true love in his life beyond his wife, was his granddaughter, Kassandra, and her family. He also enjoyed day trips fishing with his brothers David and Ed.
Harold is survived by his wife Nancy of Waldoboro; son, Nathan Benner and wife Terry of Waldoboro; granddaughter, Kassandra Benner of Union; brothers, Ed Benner and wife Pat of York and David Benner and wife Eline of Hollis, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.
