Harriette Haley Hibbard, 95, passed away on the morning of Aug. 14 at the Zimmerli Pavilion at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. She was a member of one of Maine’s oldest families, being a direct descendent of Andrew Haley who settled at the Isle of Shoals in the 1620s. She was born on Nov. 12, 1920 in Clark’s Cove, Walpole, the daughter of Rep. Earle W. Haley and Velma Pitcher Haley.
Harriette graduated from Lincoln Academy, and after college volunteered to serve in the Women’s Army Corps, a groundbreaking thing for a young woman to do at the time. She always remained very proud of her military service in WWII, and was active in supporting the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
She served in the finance division and at the end of the war, and accepted a position with the Chase National Bank, later to become Chase Manhattan Bank. After living in New York for seven years, she returned to Maine and married Ormand D. Hibbard of South Portland. After returning to Maine, she served as a volunteer for many organizations, some of which included the South Portland Library, The Victoria Mansion, Business and Professional Women’s Club (where she served as an officer for many years), and the Women’s Literary Union. She retired from Bradish Young Insurance as financial officer in 1980.
After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed trips to California and Florida to visit relatives, and especially enjoyed their camp in Etna. After her husband’s death she moved to Portland, and later to Schooner Cove in Damariscotta to be closer to where she grew up.
She leaves behind stepson, John Hibbard, wife Glenda and family of South Portland; and many nephews, nieces, and friends. She was especially close to her nephew, Larry Haley Reed of Walpole.
An interment in the Haley family lot will be held at the West Bristol Cemetery in Walpole for the family.
