Harriette Merrill Bridges, 93, of Damariscotta, passed away at her home on the evening of March 25. While making her final journey, she was lovingly supported by her granddaughter, her niece, and three of her devoted home health providers.
Born in Mechanic Falls, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Mildred (Prince) Merrill. She grew up and attended schools in Mechanic Falls until 1935, when she moved with her family to Damariscotta. She continued her schooling here and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1938. She loved living in this picturesque seacoast community, and made frequent visits to Pemaquid to just sit by the ocean, watching the ever-changing waves and surf.
Harriette was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Newcastle, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, was a member of the former Congregational Club, and served on the Board of Deacons and as a trustee.
She was a past Matron of the former Crystal Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a life member and organist of the Pemaquid Chapter #178, which is now the Beacon #202 Chapter.
In 1941, she became the secretary and receptionist for Dr. Raymond Brown, O.D., continuing on with Dr. Douglas Hancock, O.D. and then for Drs. McCormick and Bouchard. She retired from this position after 64 years of hard work and loyal service.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Leo Bridges in 2000; son, Peter L. Bridges and wife Noreen Bridges; brother, Philip F. Merrill; and brother and sister-in-law, Homer and Florence Bridges.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Linda Bridges and partner Joe Belliveau; nieces, Jackie Merrill Sparks and Donna Bridges Merriam. Other close relatives include Prisca Bridges and her son Dana Creamer; nephews, David, Robert and Lucius Bridges; cousins, Norman and Mike Sawyer; as well as other cousins, grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by so many special and loyal friends, and by her beloved beagle Kassie.
A graveside service, at the Hillside Cemetery in Damariscotta, will be announced and held later in the spring.
