Hartley Elwood Lounsbury, 88, died Jan. 9 at the home of his niece in Wiscasset.
He was born in South Bristol, April 3, 1919, the eldest child of the late Hartley and Ida Otis Lounsbury. At an early age he moved to Woolwich and attended schools in the area and also Morse High School in Bath.
Hartley served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre. He worked at Hyde-Windlass in Bath, Pratt & Whitney in West Hartford, Conn., and the Stanley Tools in New Britain, Conn. After moving back to Maine, he worked for a surveying company and finished his working career as a custodian for several years at the South Bristol Elementary School. He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge in South Bristol.
Hartley was an avid reader with a keen interest in history. Those who knew him enjoyed his dry sense of humor. He was a humble man who never spoke unkindly about another person. He enjoyed family gatherings, and his dog. He was a good neighbor and friend.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Farrin) Lounsbury, and his brother, Linwood Ray Lounsbury.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Joseph O’Grady of Friendship; a special niece and husband, Kathy and Brett Lindsey, with whom he made his home; nephew, Albert Greenleaf, Jr. and wife Barbara of Westport Island; stepchildren, Beverly Lincoln and husband Philip of South Bristol, Mary Lou Osgood of Damariscotta, and Kenneth Farrin and wife Leona of Waldoboro; and cousin, Bruce Hassan and wife MaryLou of Glastonbury, Conn.
A celebration of Hartley’s life will be held in the spring at a site and date to be determined.
