Hartley Frank Jewett, 87, of Rutherfordton, N.C. went home to be with his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on Jan. 2.
Hartley was born in Whitefield on May 11, 1922, the son of Clifford Erskine Jewett and Eva Cecil (Despres) Jewett.
He was educated in Whitefield and Pittston schools.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII, member of the American Legion, and the V.F.W. and Masons.
He was a retired tractor trailer truck driver for Standard Oil Company.
Hartley was a devoted Christian. When Calvary Bible Baptist Church was built, he volunteered many hours helping build the church there in Whitefield.
Hartley was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, V. Cathlyne Scarborough Jewett; son, James Thomas Jewett; brothers, Kenneth and Clifford Jewett and grandparents, Frank and Lubell (Smith) Jewett.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 24 years, Clara Fowlkes Jewett of Rutherfordton, N.C.; sons, Steven Jewett of Rutherfordton, N.C. and Donald E. Jewett and wife Karen of Richmond, Va.; daughters, Leta Neumann of Minneapolis, Minn., Sharon Jackson and husband Douglas Jackson of Saint Petersburg, Fla., and Karen Jewett Connor of Rutherfordton, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of Jewett cousins in Whitefield, Jefferson, Alna and Pittston, and several other family members also across the U.S.A.
Funeral service Jan. 4 at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel, Rutherfordton, N.C. with Rev. Alan Marsh officiating.
Graveside service 11 a.m., Wed., Jan. 6 at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla., where Hartley will be laid to rest beside his first wife V. Cathlyne Jewett.
