Hartley Hathorne Jr., 92, of Edgecomb, passed away peacefully at his home on July 26 with family and friends by his side. He was the son of Hartley and Mildred Bishop Hathorne, born Nov. 29, 1918 in Pembroke, Mass. He married Dorothy Dodge Reed in July of 1940. In August of 1946 they had a son.
Hartley attended Morse High School for a short time and then entered the Apprenticeship program at Bath Iron Works where he became a Tool and Die maker. He worked at BIW for 47 years and spent some time at Snow’s Shipyard in Rockland, totaling over 50 years in his trade.
Hartley enjoyed hunting and fishing and tying flies for his many friends and family. He spent many hours of fishing on Moosehead Lake and never could get enough weather being very hot or very cold, wet or dry. In 1950 he bought his son an English Setter and trained her to one of the best bird dogs in the state with people coming from all around to hunt with them.
He was predeceased by his parents, Hartley Sr., and Mildred; brothers, Alvin, Bernard and Merle; sisters, Evelyn and Madelene; wife, Dorothy Reed Hathorne; and several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his son, Barry Reed Hathorne of Edgecomb; sisters, Verlie, Retia, Barbra and Leah; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Sun., July 31 followed by a celebration of his life 1 p.m., Mon., August 1 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay.
