Harvard W. Urquhart Sr., 75, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away unexpectedly April 1 in Augusta.
Harvard was born Sept. 8, 1934 on Seguin Island in Phippsburg, a son of the late Millard and Nellie Urquhart. He was the sixth of nine children.
He grew up in Jonesport and attended local schools playing basketball and graduating from Jonesport High School. He married Nancy Conley on June 27, 1961.
He served for 24 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, during which he had time spent as lighthouse keeper on Cuckolds, and eventually retiring as Chief, in Boothbay Harbor.
After retirement he earned his Associate’s Degree in Business from the University of Maine Augusta. Upon completion he worked for Congressman Dave Emery. He was the harbor master in Boothbay Harbor and Town Manager in Mechanic Falls. Once he fully “retired,” he went back home and enjoyed lobstering with his brother.
He deeply enjoyed this past year living in the Independent Apartments of St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor where he shared many great times and stories with his fellow residents.
He was a Shriner and a member of Washington Masonic Lodge #37 A.F. & A.M. in Lubec and attended Bayview Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #196 in East Boothbay. He attended church for many years at First Baptist Church in Waldoboro and in the past year has been attending the Boothbay Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Allen Urquhart; and sister, Mary Caler.
Survivors include his daughter, Angela B. Percival and husband Christopher of Waldoboro; sons, Harvard “Wendell” Urquhart Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. and Matthew Jon Urquhart of Wiscasset; brothers, Millard Urquhart Jr. and wife Millie of Machiasport, Adelmar “Tud” Urquhart and wife Beatrice of Jonesport, Orrin Urquhart and wife Colleen of Machias and Carl Urquhart and wife Gracie of Wiscasset; sisters, Madie Urquhart of Jonesport and Gracie Urquhart of Jonesport; grandchildren, Joey Urquhart, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Nathan Stuart Percival of Waldoboro; and ex-wife and friend, Nancy Conley of Boothbay.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Thurs., April 8 with a 7 p.m. Masonic Service at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Committal service with Military Honors 12 p.m., Fri., April 9 at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
Memorial service to celebrate Harvard’s life 11 a.m., Sat., April 10 at the Boothbay Baptist Church, Boothbay.
