Hazel Lena Smith, 95, of Jefferson, passed away Dec. 24 at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills, after a long period of failing health.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 16, 1911, in Newcastle, the daughter of Clarence M. and Lena Clark Hunt. She was a graduate of Lincoln Academy and Farmington Normal School.
A lifelong teacher, she began her teaching career in 1930; first in Newcastle, then Richmond, where she met her husband, Ernest Smith. They married on Sept. 30, 1939, and moved to Jefferson, where she returned to teach math to grades 6-8 at Franklin School in Newcastle, and Castner School in Damariscotta. Mrs. Smith retired in 1975.
After retirement, she kept her home for herself, enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, and her dogs and reading.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ernest Smith, in 1993; sister, Gladys Atkinson; and brothers, Clifton A. Hunt, and Eldon Hunt.
Survivors include her daughter, Marjorie Bailey and husband Arthur; grandson, Michael Bailey and wife Kim McFarland, all of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service 11 a.m., Fri., Dec. 29 at Bunker Hill Church in Jefferson. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson.
