Helen I. Hallowell, 80, of Nobleboro, passed away on the morning of Jan. 25 at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta with her family by her side. Born in Waldoboro on Jan. 1, 1929, she was the daughter of George and Gladys (McClain) Hahn.
Helen attended Waldoboro schools and graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1947. She worked at Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro before marrying Cecil “Bud” Hallowell Jr. on Jan. 1, 1949, her 20th birthday.
For several years she and her husband ran the general store in the Damariscotta Mills, where Helen sold her famous peanut butter fudge. She later went to work at Sylvania in Waldoboro where she retired in 1990 after more than 25 years of dedicated service.
She loved the outdoors and could often be found picking berries of all sorts with her children. She had a love for the ocean and enjoyed clamming, as well as fishing on both fresh and saltwater. She was a great dancer, and together with her husband, turned many heads. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Whether it was at her home, or on a family gathering to Moosehead Lake, she cherished her time with family and friends.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Cecil, in 2002; as well as a brother, Wendell Hahn.
She is survived by six children, Larry and wife Joan of Nobleboro, Joan and husband Mark Hatch of Damariscotta, Danny and wife Julie of Kingfield, Candy and husband Billy Clifford of Nobleboro, Kelley and husband Reggie House of South Bristol, and Kurt and wife Andrea of Pemaquid; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Lottie Richards and Virginia Kennedy both of Waldoboro, and Joanne Miller and Robert Hahn both of Damariscotta; a very special cousin, Elsie Eugley of Waldoboro; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 5-7 p.m., Wed., Jan. 28 at the Strong Funeral Home. Funeral 11 a.m., Thurs., Jan. 29 at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Shuman Cemetery in Waldoboro in the spring.
