Helen Louise Baird, 85, died Sept. 5 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born Sept. 19, 1921, in East Friendship, a daughter of Carl and Rena Orne Fales. She grew up in Friendship and lived there all her life. She graduated from Thomaston High School.
She worked at the Friendship Post Office as a clerk for 22 years. After retiring from the post office she and her husband owned and operated Friendship Plumbing and Heating for 25 years until they retired in 1989. They had wintered in Jupiter, Fla. since 1982.
She was a member of the Friendship Advent Christian Church. She was also a very active member of the Friendship Auxiliary Fire Department for many years and was the Auxiliary’s first president. She and her husband enjoyed many fishing trips together.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Sherman F. Baird of Friendship; son, Stewart Baird and wife Brenda of Friendship; grandchildren, Lauren Baird of Friendship, and Ian Baird of Friendship; great-grandson, Dylan of Friendship; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Baird of Friendship; cousins, Barbara Lash and husband Winfield of Friendship, Eleanor Gushee of Warren, and Sidney Orne and wife Mary of Cushing.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Mon., Sept. 10 at the Friendship Advent Christian Church in Friendship. Revs. Alan Chamberlin, Percy Grant and William Munro will officiate.
