Helen M. Piening, 93, of Westport Island, died Jan. 16 at Cove’s Edge Nursing Center in Damariscotta, following a long illness.
She was born in London, England, Sept. 2, 1915, the daughter of Henry and Elsie Heyman Hafter. She attended local schools in England and graduated from North London Collegiate. During the war, she moved to the United States. She moved back to England after the war in 1948.
On May 30, 1933, she married Herbert Piening in London. In 1981, she returned to the United States to be closer to her children.
She worked most of her life as a tour director in England. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, gardening, knitting, sewing and cooking.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1977; son, Charles C. Piening; and brother, Gordon Hafter.
She is survived by a daughter, Veronica and husband Mario DePietro of Westport Island; grandchildren, Kyle DePietro of Westport Island, Lara DePietro of Oregon, Jenny Piening of Germany and Claude Piening of London; one great-granddaughter; sister, Margo MacKintosh of Scotland; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
