Henry “Hub” Holt Hubbard, Jr., 86, of Rockport, passed away Oct. 3 at Pen Bay Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Oct. 2, 1921 in Bronx, N.Y., the son of Henry Hold Hubbard, Sr., and Frances Lett Hubbard.
Beginning his senior year in high school, Hub played semi-pro baseball for the Bronx Mohawks until he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served during WWII from 1942-1946.
After the service, he attended night school to become a journeyman and eventually became a master plumber. He worked for Michael C. Harmony & Sons for many years as superintendent of large projects, including Indian Point Atomic Energy Plant and West Point Academy. Upon moving to Maine in 1970, he was a self-employed plumber and then worked for L.O. Gross & Sons in Camden, before retiring in 1986.
He was married 63 years to Marjorie (Hetrick) Hubbard, who predeceased him on Nov. 14, 2006.
Hub was an accomplished artist and woodworker. His family members proudly display many of his fine works of art. He was also an avid reader and loved doing word puzzles. He recently became a member of the American Legion. His dog, Nana, was his constant companion during his later years.
His family will miss his unwavering love and great sense of humor.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Stone and husband Richard of Rockport; sons, William Hubbard at the Katherine Brown Home in Hope, and Kevin Hubbard and wife Karen of Turks and Caicos Islands; sister, Elizabeth Smith of New York; sister-in-law, Jane Field of Florida; granddaughters, Marjorie Christie and husband Charles of Rockport, and Heidi Vigue and husband John of Thomaston; and great-grandchildren, Margaret (Bella) Christie and Mary Frances Christie of Rockport, Cassandra Webber of Bangor, and Drew Webber and Sophia Vigue of Thomaston.
A private family graveside service was held at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston.
