Howard C. Reed, Sr., 81, of Waldoboro, died peacefully at home on Aug. 13 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Feb. 13, 1926 in Rockland, a son of Chester and Mildred Reed.
He grew up in Rockland and started working and supporting himself as young boy. He worked at various jobs and saved enough money to buy his farm at the age of 16.
On the farm he raised hens, beef cattle, and was well known for his poultry business. He loved all animals. He also ran bulldozers and heavy equipment, working around the clock, clearing his land and doing excavation work. He built many of the houses that he rented.
Work was his life and enjoyment. He would do anything for anyone. He was always busy, enjoyed life and was always good-hearted and smiling.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially time with his grandchildren, Howard C. Reed and fiancée Pearl Griffin, Travis Reed and companion Sally Gracie, and Katie Reed, all who lived with him and cared for him. He also enjoyed his great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Fred Ames; grandson, Wesley Reed; brothers, Albert and Gerald Reed; and sister, Phyllis Simmons.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marion “Babe” Reed of Waldoboro; son, Ronald H. Reed and wife Sue of Waldoboro; daughter, Suzanne Ames of Connecticut; sisters, Violet Benner of California, Ruth Benner of Rockland, and Nancy Mirch of Thomaston; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Wed., Aug. 15 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
Celebration of Howard’s life 2 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 16 at Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Rawley officiating.
Burial will follow at the Orff’s Corner Cemetery in Waldoboro.
