Howard Kipp Kornahrens, 90, of South Bristol, died July 14 at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home, Damariscotta, after a long illness.
Howard, the son of Herman and Adelaide Kornahrens, was born in Weehauken, N.J. on Nov. 23, 1917. After graduating from Columbia University in 1939, he worked for General Electric until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was a destroyer officer for much of the war and received the North Atlantic, European and Mediterranean Campaign ribbons. On D-Day, he was serving on the USS Carmick, which was one of the first ships at Omaha Beach. In 1944 Howard met his wife-to-be, Marguerite, who was also serving her country as a U.S. Navy WAVE Officer, when he entered her office to requisition supplies for the Carmick.
After his discharge, Howard returned to General Electric, where he served as a manager and eventually Vice-President, specializing in insurance and financial operations.
In 1980, he retired to South Bristol, where he and his wife made their home. Howard loved golf and in the spring, summer and fall he could usually be found at Wawenock Country Club indulging his passion. During his retirement he served a term as treasurer at Wawenock and was on the South Bristol Planning Board.
Howard was predeceased by his son Howard Kornahrens II.
He is survived by his wife Marguerite; daughters, Holly Emmons and husband Robert of South Bristol, and Heather Hendrix and husband Philip of Brighton, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Lee Emmons of South Bristol and Casey and Kelly Kornahrens of Port Washington, N.Y.
A private service for the family will be held later this summer.
