Howard Marksville Cushing, 96, of New Harbor, died on the afternoon of May 15 at his home of 67 years with family by his side.
He was born at Pemaquid Beach Jan. 2, 1922 to Ernest and Janet (McLain) Cushing. He grew up at Pemaquid Beach, first attending the Hawthorne School and later Bristol High School before being drafted into the Army in November 1942. He went through basic training at Camp Maxey, Tex. before being receiving an Honorable Discharge in September 1943 due to medical reasons.
On May 27, 1950 he married Adelyn L. Smith of Round Pond and together they raised five children and grandson Michael and enjoyed 50 years of marriage before her passing in 2001. They enjoyed weekend excursions together exploring the northeast and the Canadian Maritimes. He was a hard worker and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed meeting his friends for coffee down at the shore and The Samoset Restaurant among other hangouts throughout the years. He enjoyed working in the woods and cutting his own firewood for many years, raising a variety of livestock, and growing a garden.
Howdy had many jobs throughout the years including lobstering with his father early on, buying lobsters, trucking lobsters from Corea to Boston, tending the landfill, working to build local roads and canning fish at Medomak Canning Co. in Waldoboro. He drove the school bus for 30 years for Bristol, was in the poultry business, and had a rubbish collection business all at the same time.
He was predeceased by his wife, Adelyn; eldest son, Paul; and brothers, George, Erndale, and Douglas.
He is survived by children, Carol Enders and husband Villi, David Cushing and wife Cathy, Robert Cushing and wife Bonnie, and Paula Shorey and husband Louis; grandson and caregiver, Michael Cushing; grandchildren, Mathew Cushing, Joshua and Brittany Shorey, Christiana and Alexander Enders, and Riley and Sean Cushing; great-grandchild, Abigail; along with several nieces and nephews.
Per his request there will be no funeral services.
