Hubert Martin Marshall, 97, of Chamberlain and Lunenburg, Mass., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 19.
“Hugh” was born on May 1, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio to Wilhelmena and Lycurgus (“LL”) Marshall. His father was an Ohio State Senator for many years and also served as U.S. Representative. His uncle, John D. Marshall was Mayor of the city of Cleveland. Hugh was a graduate of Euclid Shore High School, Western Reserve University, and, like his father before him, Western Reserve (now Case Western Reserve) Law School.
On Nov. 22, 1940, he married the great love of his life, Marian Nelson. Hugh served as a naval gunnery officer in WWII. He followed that with a long and successful career with AT&T and later Ohio Bell Telephone Company, during which time the family resided in Aurora, Ohio. He retired from his position as Vice President of Public Affairs in 1980.
At that time, he and his wife made a permanent move to their beloved vacation home on the tip of Long Cove Point, Chamberlain. They spent many happy years there, with frequent trips to Florida and South Carolina during the winter months.
Hugh’s love of poetry gave him joy throughout his life. Even in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease, he was able to recite his favorite poems, which was a great source of comfort to him.
Hugh’s only brother, Edward L. Marshall, died while serving in the Navy during WWII.
Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marian; son, Kirk and wife Wendy and their four children; son, Keith and wife Rose and their son; son, James and wife Diane and their three children; and daughter, Victoria Smith and husband Paul; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A private burial will be held in Maine at a later date.
