Hugh G. Williams, of Bristol, hardworking farmer, dedicated educator and expert sailor, died on Dec. 3. With Hugh’s passing, his friends and family will miss a gentleman with great wit, interest in others and an expansive knowledge of many topics, especially literature and music.
Hugh was born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Myron and Helen Williams. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and then earned a Masters Degree in English from Harvard University. He served four years in the U.S. Army and upon discharge, began his teaching career.
Hugh moved to Bremen in 1948 to run a poultry farm. When it became apparent that “the little guy” wasn’t going to survive in that business, he returned to teaching English at Thomaston High School, now Georges Valley, in 1962. He retired to enjoy a life of sailing, reading and enjoying friendships, newfound and old.
Hugh leaves behind, to share his legacy, his sons, Hugh Williams of Pemaquid Falls, Roger Williams of Bremen and daughter Daphne Warren of Saco; and grandchildren, Page Williams of Bristol, Megan Williams of Portland, Maitland Williams of Bremen and Katie Warren of Malden, Mass.
The Bristol First Responders were always there to answer calls to Hugh’s need. For those who wish to make a donation in Hugh William’s name, such contributions may be sent to Bristol First Responders, 104 Southside Rd., New Harbor, ME 04554.
At Hugh’s request, there will be no services.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
