I. Marjorie (Doe) Huntley, 86, passed away April 11 at St. Andrew’s Hospital, Boothbay Harbor.
The daughter of Arthur F. and Estella M. (Leighton) Doe, she was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Sheepscott.
She married George “Skeet” Huntley in Sheepscott in August of 1953.
A graduate of Lincoln Academy, Newcastle, Class of 1938, she went on to earn her Bachelors Degree from Gorham Normal School (now USM) in 1942, and her Masters Degree in teaching from Boston University in 1953.
Mrs. Huntley dedicated her professional life to teaching and serving several schools, including West Stewartson, N.H., Buzzards Bay, Mass., Wellesley Hills, Mass., and Arlington, Mass. After returning to Maine, she served at Franklin Grammar School, Newcastle and for many years was a teacher’s aide at Woolwich Central School, retiring at the age of 70.
A lifelong member of the Sheepscott United Methodist Church, she served in the Sheepscott Community Church Ladies Circle and Newcastle Extension, the Newcastle Planning Board, and was a long-time member of the Lincoln Academy Alumni Council, which included her work on the Academy’s 200th anniversary in 2001.
Mrs. Huntley was predeceased by her husband, George “Skeet” Huntley in 1983, as well as a brother, Arthur L. Doe.
She leaves her son, Brian D. Huntley and wife Diane of Coopers Mills; granddaughters, Robin M. and Devon W. Huntley of Coopers Mills; brother, Louis L. Doe and wife Judy of Newcastle; sister-in-law, Florence Doe of Lewiston; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are invited to be with the family 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Thurs., April 19 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
Service to honor her memory 2 p.m., Fri., April 20 at the Sheepscott United Methodist (lower) Church, with Rev. Bruce M. Young officiating.
She will be laid to rest with her husband at Hillside Cemetery in Damariscotta.
