Irene Nadeau, 89, of Casco, passed away at her home on the morning of Dec. 8. Born in Waterville, on March 30, 1921, she was the daughter of Philippe and Elizabeth (Wintle) Poulin.
Irene attended Waterville and Fairfield schools before going to work at the Hathaway Shirt and Keyes Fibre Companies. On July 1, 1946, she married Edward L. Nadeau and the couple would reside at State Fish Hatcheries in Greenville, Embden and Casco.
After Eddie’s retirement, she enjoyed spending summers at their Wilson Pond camp in Greenville, and winters in Dunnellon, Fla., before returning to Casco full time.
Irene loved nature and Maine’s woods and lakes, especially those of the Greenville area. She would pick berries that would turn into jams and jellies, and gather fir tips that she made into scented pillows. She loved to play card games, and until Eddie’s death in July, she enjoyed daily cribbage games with her husband of over 64 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward; brothers, Louis and Norman Poulin; and sister, Juliene Poirier.
She is survived by a daughter, Claire Hancock and husband Douglas of Damariscotta; sons, Alan and wife Bing of Poland Springs, Donald and wife Kelly of Lancaster, Penn. and Larry and wife Nona of Otisfield; grandchildren, Dusty Hancock, Cara Slifka, Heath Nadeau, Nicholas Nadeau, Derek Nadeau, Jenna Nadeau and Nathan Nadeau; as well as great-grandchildren, Tatum Hancock, Sadie Hancock and Sidney Slifka.
Service 11 a.m., Tues., Dec. 14 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
