Ivy Bell (Manchester) Gould, 99, of Friendship, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 14 at her home.
She was born Nov. 24, 1911 in Addison, the third of 11 children to Milton and Mertie Church Manchester. In the summer after completing the 8th grade, her mother was hospitalized for a number of weeks. At the age of 13, she cared for her younger siblings, even making her little sister a dress. Due to this event, she left school after the 8th grade and she worked at the Underwoods Factory in Jonesport as a teenager and throughout her early years.
When Ivy turned 20 she married Thurman Gould and they moved to Kittery Point near where he was stationed in the Coast Guard. After having served in the Coast Guard for three years, her husband was discharged and the couple moved to Beal’s Island off the coast from Jonesport. Thurman went back to fishing and in 1961, the couple made the hard decision to move to Friendship and leave Jonesport behind. She worked as bookkeeper for her husband’s thriving fishing business for many years. She would often drive to various harbors to get supplies to her husband’s fishing boats
She was well known for her beautiful flower gardens. Her family and her faith to the Lord were the most important things in her life. She was also known for her excellent crocheted handiwork that will be around for years to come. She was a highly organized person and was a faithful supporter of her children’s activities and achievements. She was a member for more than 50 years of the United Pentecostal Church and attended the Advent Christian Church on Beal’s Island and Friendship.
Ivy often gave spiritual advice to young people.
Ivy was holder of the coveted Boston Post Gold-Headed Cane in Friendship as the oldest resident of the town. When she received the cane, she was very surprised and delighted.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Thurman W. Gould Sr.; parents; brothers, Hiley, Harold, Lessie, Leroy and Frank Manchester; and sister, Katie Foss, now leaving only Thurston, Florence, Vannie and Dorothy from the original 11 siblings.
She is survived by three sons, Thurman W. Gould Jr. and wife Margaretha of Titusville, Fla., Keith V. Gould and wife Irvinia (Vinnie) of Waldoboro and George M.
