J. Malcolm Barter, 90, born in Beverly, Mass. on March 12, 1920, passed away on Oct. 16 at the Robertsdale Health Care Center in Robertsdale, Ala. Malcolm Barter was a graduate of Harvard University majoring in Journalism. During and after college Malcolm worked for the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, Waldoboro Press, The Courier Gazette and retired as the assistant to the publisher of the Down East Magazine.
Malcolm spent his spare time racing Friendship sloops, cutting firewood, gardening, digging clams and getting together with “the over the hill gang.” In addition he devoted time to the 4-H, Soil Conservation, Dutch Neck Community Center and was the moderator for the Bremen town meetings.
Malcolm was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothea who passed away in 1986, and second wife, Helen, who passed away in 2004; and daughter, Julia Gillam.
Malcolm is survived by children, Elizabeth Somes of Southport, N.C., Michael Barter of Delano, Tenn. and Ann Lane of Fayetteville, N.C., eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Malcolm’s ashes will be spread along the shores of the coast of Maine where he lived the majority of his life.
