Jacqueline C. Kelsey, 77, of South Bristol, passed away at her home on July 1. Jacqueline (Jackie) was born on May 13, 1934 in Burlington, Vt., the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Hallisey and Ralph Davis. Jackie’s mother died prematurely, and Jackie was adopted by her father’s second wife, Lucile Davis, who became “Mom” to Jackie in every sense of the word.
Jackie’s professional calling was to be a nurse. She received her formal nurses’ training at Pennsylvania Hospital, where she worked until she came to South Bristol with Ralph and Lucile, where Ralph owned and operated the Thompson Inn. Jackie met and married William Kelsey, and became employed as a nurse at Miles Memorial Hospital. However, after having children, she changed her focus to her family, and fulfilled her desire to help others through private nursing. She held the official title of “Health Officer” in South Bristol for many years. When someone was sick or hurt, they asked for Jackie. Jackie also provided nursing services to many South Bristol residents who were terminally ill, providing care that today would be described as hospice care. Jackie’s caring and good common sense earned her a place in the hearts of those she helped.
Jackie was an example of what life was once like in South Bristol. She could technically be described as “from away,” but through her actions and good nature, she became an accepted member of the village.
Jackie is survived by her husband of 54 years, William A. Kelsey; children, Brian, Paul and Shelley, and their spouses Kathy, Lisa and Greg; brother, Robert Davis of Vermont; and grandchildren, Kristen, Brent, Chad, Turner, Alden, Eric and Matt.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jacqueline C. Kelsey may be made to Miles & St. Andrews Home Health & Hospice, c/o Development Office, 35 Miles St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
