James (Jim) Paul Manning, 76, died on April 11 at the Anne Arundel County Medical Center in Annapolis, Md., after suffering a sudden stroke at his Annapolis home on April 8.
Jim was a happy summer resident of Damariscotta (Cottage Point) and enjoyed sailing and kayaking on the River. Friends and neighbors often commented on his quiet demeanor and measured discourse.
Jim was born in Anderson County, Mo. Jan. 30, 1934 and spent his childhood in San Diego, Cal. He attended San Diego State University and the University of Nevada at Reno but was drafted into the U.S. Army in Fort Gordon, Ga. before graduating. He taught electronics from 1957-1959.
Jim joined IBM in 1959, working in Moses Lake, Wash. as a hardware engineer on the IBM SAGE computer system (the continental air-defense network commissioned by the U.S. military); then he worked as a software engineer and programmer. He left IBM in 1981 to work at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles in its Mainframe Computer Department. In 1984 he returned to IBM, retiring in 1991. Following retirement from IBM, he went to work for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, D.C. from 1991-2002.
He enjoyed driving and restoring old cars, starting with his first car, which was a 1946 right-drive MG, which he acquired when he was 16. He also loved listening to jazz and was a prolific reader.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children in Los Angeles, Jay (Maria) and Sarah; grandchildren, Peter and Josephine, also of Los Angeles, Cal.
Memorial service celebrating his life will be held in Washington, D.C. at a later date.
