James Kirkwood Sparrell, 83, of Damariscotta, died suddenly on Sept. 17. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.
Jim was born on March 11, 1932 and grew up in Wickford, R.I. He graduated from Norwich University and received his Master of Science from MIT. While at MIT, Jim met his future wife, Betty. After they were married, they settled in Marblehead, Mass. and later moved to Damariscotta.
An inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur, he designed systems that flew in the Apollo program and test instruments that improved automobile safety. He founded two companies, including Sparrell Engineering Research Corporation, which he ran until his late 70s.
He was a sailor, world traveler, trombone player and car collector. He founded the Down East Sports Car Club, was a fixture of the Down East Chapter of the Model T Ford Club, and volunteer at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.
He was predeceased by his brother, Charles.
In addition to his wife Betty, Jim is survived by his sister, Ann Dorey of Plymouth; son, Stephen Sparrell of Nobleboro; daughter, Laurie and husband Don Gardner of Glastonbury, Conn.; son, Carlton Sparrell and wife Renya Onasick of Marblehead, Mass.; grandchildren, Hannah, Daniel, Annika and Grace; and great-granddaughter, Page.
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., Sept. 26 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
