James Walter Loney, M.D. died July 31 in Damariscotta. He was born in Newcastle, Penn. on Oct. 18, 1917, the son of Venzie Belle Woods Loney and James Richard Loney. “Walt” lived in Niles and Willard, Ohio and graduated from Willard High School in 1936. He worked his way through Western Reserve University, earning a degree in Chemistry in 1941. He then worked for Standard Oil in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Miriam Whitehead Loney in 1942. “Jim” or “Slim” served with the 10th Special Service Company in the Pacific Islands from 1942 to 1946. He earned a medical degree from Western Reserve University Medical School in 1950.
Dr. Loney practiced medicine in Warren, Ohio from 1954 to 1965, and held many positions within the medical and general community. He worked for the General Electric Company in Cleveland, Ohio from 1966 to 1981. He married Gertrude Keplinger Murphy in 1970. They moved to Mesa, Ariz. in 1981. “Doc” Loney has lived at Chase Point and Cove s Edge in Damariscotta since 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers, his wife and ex-wife.
Survivors include his son, James Robert Loney of Phippsburg; daughters, Molly Loney of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Patricia Loney of Phippsburg, and Peggy Loney Mueller of Edwardsville, Ill.; step son, Patrick Murphy of Concho, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Loney of Willard, Ohio, Carol Whitehead of Brunswick; Edie Whitehead of Bath, and Marie DuHamel of Mesa, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Macy Whitehead of Bath; honored family friend Iretha Rucker of Warren, and many nieces and nephews.
Private memorial services were held in Maine.
Graveside service 10 a.m., Sat., Aug. 9 at Mountain View Memorial Garden, 7900 East Main St., Mesa, AZ 85207.
