Jane Ashman Perry, 88, of Chelsea, passed away Dec. 19 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Glenridge, following a brief illness.
She was born in Monroe, N.Y., Jan. 14, 1919, a daughter of the late Robert I. Ashman II and Gladys (Cox) Ashman. She was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1937 and attended Gilford College in Greensboro, N.C.
She was a homemaker for most of her life, but had been employed for several years at Chernowsky’s Department Store and Adams Department Store in downtown Augusta. She previously worked as a ticket agent for Executive Airlines.
In the 1960’s, Jane earned her private pilot’s license. In the 1970’s, she and her husband Bill took hot air balloon lessons in Florida. She enjoyed gardening at her homes in Chelsea and Pemaquid and also enjoyed swimming and skiing.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, William L. Perry, whom she married on Nov. 4, 1939; brother, Robert I. Ashman III; and sister, Shirley Ashman Yih.
She is survived by sons, William H. Perry and wife Katherine of Chelsea and Pemaquid Point and H. Scott Perry of Chelsea; daughters, Roberta P. Berry and fiancé Gregory J. Farris of Whitefield and Shirley P. Whitney and husband Jim Goulet of Chelsea; sister, Rena Ashman McClellan of Pinehurst, N.C.; grandchildren, Mark Perry and wife Kirsten, Susan Brannigan and husband Mike, Peter Perry, Maureen Rouillard, Kevin Perry, Jonathan Berry and wife Jessica, Elizabeth MacKenney and husband Scott, Heidi Delp and husband Darin, and Thor Whitney and wife Michele; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Ashman Memorial Cemetery, Chelsea.
