Jane Elizabeth (Winters) Meister, 93, died peacefully on May 10 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor. Jane was born to Matthew and Ninetta (Illingworth) Winters on March 21, 1921 in Chicago, Ill. She attended local schools and graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Jane met her future husband, Jack Meister, at Indiana University and they were married on Sept. 4, 1942 in Indianapolis, Ind. During WWII, Jane worked as a cartographer (mapmaker). When the war ended, she stayed home and raised four children. When her kids were old enough, Jane went back to school, received her teaching certificate, and began a career teaching kindergarten through fourth grade, first in Camden, N.J., then in the Baltimore school district in Maryland, and finally in Lancaster, Penn.
Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking. She was a member of the Junior League and Eastern Star, and worked as a docent at the James Buchanan House in Lancaster, Penn. Jane attended the North Bay Community Church in Clearwater, Fla. and the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, Penn.
In 1987 she and her husband moved to Florida where she worked at her son’s deli. Jane moved to California in 2000 and then later to Maine in 2002 to be closer to her daughters.
Jane is predeceased by her husband, Jack Meister; sister, Barbara Burridge; and brother, Matthew Winters Jr.
She is survived by daughters, Barbara Wyman of Newcastle, and Susan Bolt of Bethel Island, Cal.; sons, John Meister of Oldsmar, Fla., and Kurt Meister of New York, N.Y.; granddaughters, Hannah Barth of Santa Monica, Cal., and April Wolfe of Clearwater, Fla.; grandson, Matthew Bolt of Bethel Island, Cal.; and many nieces and nephews.
A private family celebration of Jane’s life will be held in September.
