Jane S. Foster, 88, of Waldoboro, passed away on the afternoon of Sept. 26 at Miles Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Portland, she was the daughter of Robert H. Foster and Marguerite (Sexton) Foster.
After the death of her mother in 1926, Jane and her sister lived in Portland, with their paternal grandparents, until their father remarried in 1931. During school vacations, she worked at her father’s bookbinding and paper ruling business, J.E. Foster and Son, in Portland, a job she never failed to say she loved to do. Jane graduated from Portland High School in the Class of 1936.
Jane spent many wonderful summers in Round Pond, where her family rented a summer cottage. The summers were filled with swimming, dancing and picnics with her family and friends. Jane was a beautiful dancer.
After graduating from high school, Jane was employed at the Boyd Company, Portland. She then began her long career working for the telephone company. Jane was a devoted telephone employee and was recognized in May of 1972, for not missing a day of work since July of 1945. She retired in 1983 after 43 years. A longtime member of Telecom Pioneers, she was also an avid bowler and bowled in several leagues.
Jane moved to Belfast in 1999, to reside with her sister and in 2004 relocated to Harbor Hill, an assisted living facility in Belfast. She came to Waldoboro in June of 2006.
Her sister predeceased her in June of 2005.
Jane is survived by her brother and wife, Robert S. and Hilma J. Foster of Waldoboro; nine nieces and nephews, Karen Goyet and husband Michael of Saco, Dana Foster of West Gardiner, Parul Foster of Wiscasset, Lelia Dyer and husband Dana of Waldoboro, Jeanette Balanger and husband Michael of Augusta, Mary Salvatore and husband Al, Kathy Knight, Michael Greeley and wife April, and Maureen Ladd and husband Dan, all of Belfast, as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to be with the family, 10-11 a.m., Sat., Sept. 30 at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. Service to honor Jane’s life at 11 a.m., with Rev. Alfred Irving officiating. She will be laid to rest privately, with her mother, at the Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
