Janet A. Peck, 91, of Bremen, died Sept. 29 after a brief illness while in hospice care at Quarry Hill in Camden.
Mrs. Peck was born Sept. 20, 1924 in Boston, the daughter of the late Guy and Gladys (Blood) Houghton. She was a graduate of the Milton High School in Massachusetts and the Chamberlain School of Design where she majored in fashion design. She married Frederick A. Peck in 1946, and made their home in Needham, Mass. before retiring to Brewster, Mass., and later, Bremen.
While living in Needham, Mrs. Peck was a welfare board member, taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church, volunteered with the Red Cross, the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and at the local hospital where she taught crafts to the patients. She also campaigned for Dwight D. Eisenhower. After moving to Brewster, she was a Sunday school teacher, the vice president of the Brewster Garden Club and a rug hooking club member.
During her later years in Bremen, Mrs. Peck continued to volunteer for the Red Cross where she accumulated more than 50 years of service, and was a member of the Newcastle-Damariscotta Women’s Club, the Maine Rose Society, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Lincoln Home Founder’s Day, the Congregational Church library, Daffodil Days, the Miles Rummage Sale, and the Miles House and Garden Tours.
She enjoyed bird watching, playing tennis, gardening, rug hooking, quilting, baking, and raising roses and daylilies while caring for her two cats and the many birds visiting her feeders year round. She was an avid reader of mystery books, and participated in the Coastal Senior College.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Peck was preceded in death by her husband of more than 66 years, Frederick, who died on June 20, 2012.
Mrs. Peck is survived by her children, David Peck and wife Beth of Bellingham, Mass., Deborah Peck and husband Ralph Martin of Jefferson, and Donald Peck and wife Glendajoy of Concord, N.H.; grandchildren, Scott Peck, Christine Peck, Dan Hanafin and Nathan Peck; great-grandchildren, Breanna Peck and Hunter Morin; sister, Karen Dykas of Higganum, Conn.; brothers-in-law, Donald and Harold Peck, both of Milford, Conn.; cousin, Alicia Taylor of Silver Springs, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at the convenience of her family. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Burial Ground in Hamden, Conn.
