Janice Kinnear Hollis, 68, of Portland, passed away on July 10. She was born Oct. 9, 1944 in Portsmouth, N.H. to Nathalie (McLain) and Arthur Kinnear. She grew up in Pemaquid on the family farm, and while attending high school, she worked in the family ice cream and soda shop.
She graduated from Bristol High School, Glen Cove Bible College, and Berkshire Christian College studying religion and teaching.
She moved to Portland in the late 1960s to work for Humpty Dumpty Potato Chip company. After that, she worked as a telephone operator until retiring 26 years later. She went back to school at Southern Maine Technical College for medical assisting.
Janice loved attending classes about religion and history, family picnics at the beach, fresh picked berries, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and community dinners. She was active in many churches, including First Baptist Church of Damariscotta, First Baptist Church of Portland, Salvation Army of Portland, Woodford’s Congregational Church of Portland, and White Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church. In her spare time, she volunteered for Beacon Hospice.
She is survived by daughters, Corrie Hollis of Portland, and Nathalie Ray of Ocala, Fla.; son, Andrew Hollis of Portland; brother, Charles Kinnear of Morgan, Ut.; and cousin, Theo Barstow of Damariscotta.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Thurs., July 18 at New Harbor Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Damariscotta Baptist Church.
