Jean Brooks Shackelford, 91, of Damariscotta, passed away on March 22 at the Lincoln Home after a long illness.
Jean was born on Aug. 30, 1918 in Cambridge, Mass. to Philip and Blanche (Pray) Brooks. She grew up in Framingham Center, Mass.
Jean was a 1940 graduate of Simmons College in Boston, earning her B.S. degree in Library Science, after which she was a Librarian at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
She married Charles H. Shackelford in 1942 and they lived for many years in the towns of Hamilton and Wenham, Mass., raising their children there.
Jean was an active volunteer at the library, garden club and the Wenham Village Improvement Society in those towns.
Jean and her husband Charlie retired to Damariscotta in 1977 where they pursued their hobbies and their love of the outdoors. She was an avid tennis player, excellent cook and enjoyed volunteering for the Skidompha Library and Miles Memorial Hospital League. Jean will be remembered for her many years at the Firehouse Dress Shop on the Bristol Road.
Jean will be remembered for her sincerity, her love of animals, her wonderful sense of humor and those sparkling blue eyes.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Charlie and their son, Peter.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Wager of Branchport, N.Y. and Ann Silva of Union; son-in-law, Stan Silva of Union; grandchildren, Natalie Pashoukos, Christopher Wager, Tim Silva and Katy Silva; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Mia and Ethan; brother and sister-in-law, P. Preston and Louise Brooks; as well as three nephews and their families.
Memorial service for the family will be held at a later date.
