Jean Porter Wroth, better known to her friends as “Bobbie”, died Jan 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital. She was 91.
Bobbie was born Aug. 7, 1916 in Elizabeth, N.J. She spent her childhood in Atlanta, Ga. and Windham, N.Y.
After graduating from Swarthmore College in 1937, she earned her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street Graduate School of Education, New York City, N.Y.
While taking courses there she met her husband-to-be, Rufus Wroth, and spent her honeymoon on Pemaquid Point. There she fell forever in love with Maine and the Pemaquid Peninsula.
Bobbie was an avid reader, gardener and nature lover. She had a deep respect for the thousands of little things that occurred in her daily contact with life. Her great passion was the contact she had with her friends and community.
In 1991, she moved from Pemaquid to Newcastle but rarely missed a day walking around the Point with her beloved dogs, taking in the day with an ever-open heart and eyes.
Bobbie was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church where she faithfully served on the Altar Guild for more than 20 years.
She is survived by her son, Peregrine and wife Ann Marie of St. Louis, Mo. and daughter Marion Canning and husband Jim of South Hadley, Mass.; grandchildren, Ashley Bibb and husband Chris of Charlottesville, Va., and Peregrine III and wife Kitt of St. Louis, Mo.; Ann s children, Jennifer Dufour Pelc and Todd Dufour; and Marion s children, Samuel Lundstrom of Dublin, Penn. and Christian Lundstrom of Meridan, Conn.
