Jerry (Bernal) Lothrop, of Whitefield, died Dec. 19 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, following a short illness.
He was born Jan. 12, 1940.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Dolly (Dolores) Lothrop; brother, Eaton Lothrop and wife Nancy of Lee; and aunt and uncle, Edwina and George Thompson of Alexander.
His mother, Frances Gamage and father, Denzil Lothrop predeceased him.
Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Dolly snuck away often and enjoyed the great outdoors. The one thing he wanted most was to get a moose permit; that never happened.
He was one of the founding fathers and mothers of The Whitefield Athletic Association. He loved coaching peewee basketball and farm league baseball. He was a man of discipline, but the kids loved him. He then graduated to coaching adult softball, women’s and men’s league and tried to assist in co-ed softball. Jerry was an A.S.A. umpire in the Capitol Area Umpires Association for several years.
With his quick wit, he always had a joke to tell for any occasion. Some were even funny. He enjoyed gardening and raising green mountain potatoes. He said he enjoyed raising ones that were so big, he didn t have to lie about them. He mostly enjoyed giving all the vegetables away to whomever came along.
There will be a graveside service in the spring.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
