Joan G. Reibel passed away peacefully on Jan. 4 at her daughter’s home in Waldoboro, following a long illness.
She was born in Jackson Heights, Long Island, N.Y., a daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude O’Connell Raymond. She was a graduate of Ramsey High School, class of 1957.
In 1958, she married the love of her life, Michael R. Reibel, Sr., and together they made their home in New Jersey, raising their three children. She was employed for over 10 years at the Allendale Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide. She loved bowling and was an avid ten-pin bowler.
In 1979, Joan, Michael and their family relocated to Waldoboro. She was employed by (Shop ‘N Save) Hannaford for 17 years as a cashier where she enjoyed seeing and catching up with all of her local friends.
Her family was her life and it revolved around her. She had coffee made everyday between 3:30 and 4 in the afternoon so that after work each day her children and their families could come by and share a cup of coffee, a story and time together catching up. She always remembered her friends, Fran and David Bowman, with a cold drink waiting. Every Sunday afternoon, the family would gather and share Sunday dinner together. She is lovingly remembered as “Grandma” by her grandchildren and “G.G.” by her young, great grandchildren.
Her favorite pastimes were lawn-saling, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, and delighting in Chinese food.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael R. Reibel, Sr., 1996.
Survivors include her daughters, Valarie Newcomb and husband Rodney of Waldoboro, and Maureen Achorn of Rockland; son, Michael Reibel and wife Lisa of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Bobby Podrasky and wife Bethany of Waldoboro, Jennifer Vannah and husband Ernie of Waldoboro, Justin Podrasky of Waldoboro, Amanda and Meagan Reibel of Waldoboro, Malinda Day and husband Bill of Skowhegan, Billy Achorn, Jr. and wife Jen of Union, Stephanie Achorn of Rockland, and Jonathan Achorn of Sangerville; step-grandchildren, Katrina Anderson and husband Jason of Baltimore, Md., and Brandon Newcomb of Union; great-grandchildren, Taylor Podrasky of Waldoboro, Daniel Vannah of Waldoboro, Courtney, Christian, Zachery, Joshua, Constance and Candace Day of Skowhegan, Felicity Achorn of Rockland, William Achorn of Union, and Sardias Anderson of Maryland; lifelong friend, Shirley Eikhof of Suffern, N.Y.; and dear friend, Ginger Copp of Cushing.
