Joan Toombs Ludlow, 78, of Bristol, passed away peacefully at home on July 17 after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Portland on Dec. 17, 1934, she was the daughter of Alfred E. and Elaine (Seaman) Toombs.
Joan lived in various places throughout her childhood and finally settled in Plandome, N.Y., where she graduated from Manhasset High School (class of 1952) and Centenary Junior College in New Jersey (class of 1954).
Joan married Charles N. Ludlow in 1955 and they lived in Sea Cliff, N.Y., where they raised their three sons. She worked as a secretary at North Shore Junior High School. Joan and Charlie retired to South Reading, Vt., and lived in a renovated farmhouse there before moving to Maine in 1992.
Joan was very active locally as a volunteer at the Bristol Area Library and the Weymouth House and as a member of the Congregational Church of Bristol. She had a lifelong love of hand crafts and was an accomplished knitter, weaver, rug hooker, quilter and needle worker.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Charlie; and son, James.
Joan is survived by brother, Alfred E. (Ted) Toombs Jr. and his family; son, David and wife Deborah (Venno) and children, John, William and Anna; and son, John and wife Eileen (Byrne) and sons, Daniel and James.
The family plans a memorial service at a later date.
