Joanna Dickson McCorkle, 84, of Brunswick, died at her home on Jan. 1.
She was born in Philadelphia, Penn., Aug. 23, 1923, daughter of Helen Porter and Pemberton M. Dickson. She graduated from high school in Swarthmore, Penn. and attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. and the University of Pennsylvania.
She was an artist, an avid reader and a life-long educator. Joanna volunteered throughout her life for various organizations, including Trinity Episcopal Church, The Child Guidance Clinic, Round Top Center for the Arts and Tedford Shelter.
She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Henry L. McCorkle in 2000.
Mr. and Mrs. McCorkle opened their home to individuals and families from all over the world through cultural exchange programs. They were also world travelers and patrons of the arts.
Joanna is survived by sisters, Jean Chiquoine and husband John D. of Orr’s Island and Judith Warren and husband Harry K. of Brunswick; children, Laura Crawford and husband Bruce G. of New London, N.H., Nina Kass and husband Peter H. of Nobleboro, and Maynard McCorkle and wife Claudia S. of Topsham; and five grandchildren.
A celebration of Joanna’s life will be held at a later date.
