Joanna MacMurtry Workman, 93, of Thomasville, Ga., passed away on Jan. 5. She was born the day World War I ended, Nov. 11, 1918, in Beverly, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth MacMurtry. She was a long-time resident of Massachusetts, however her heart was in Maine where she was a summer resident on Pemaquid Trail in New Harbor for more than 35 years. She moved to Thomasville, Ga. 10 years ago to be closer to her family.
Joanna was educated in Beverly schools, graduating from Beverly High School in 1936, Colby College in Waterville in 1941 and she received a Master’s degree in Education from Boston University in 1959. She taught 3rd and 4th grades in Memorial School, Upton, Mass. for 26 years.
Other than enjoying her family and teaching, she made many friends, singing in her church choir and local choral societies where ever she lived in Maine, Massachusetts, Florida and Georgia. An accomplished artist, she enjoyed painting scenes in a free style using gull feathers for brushes with water base black printers ink, and she loved to send her “Holy Scraps” to her friends far and wide.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Clark; brother, John MacMurtry; and infant brother, Samuel over 95 years ago.
She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Linwood of Thomasville, Ga.; sons, John (Ginnie) of Bellville, Ohio, and Philip (Susan) of Thomasville, Ga.; grandchildren, Panda and Tracy of California, Heather (Parks) of Tallahassee, Ga., and Holly (Jake) of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren Robert, Andrew, McKinley, and baby Sada; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at a later date in New Harbor.
