John B. Sutter, 97, of Woolwich, died Jan. 15 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Danforth on March 11, 1913, a son of Brice J. and Bertha (Hanson) Sutter. He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1930. He was employed by the CCC and then entered the U.S. Navy serving in the Philippines during WWII. He was employed full time as a rural postal carrier for the Wiscasset Post Office and also at Bath Iron Works as a welding instructor and lead man, retiring from both in the 1970s.
He was a life member of the Masons in Bath, the Shriners, the American Legion in Wiscasset, Dunlap’s Commandry, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Woolwich Grange, Sagadahoc Pomona Grange, and State and National Grange.
He enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the country with his wife.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte F. Sutter of Woolwich; sons, William Langer of Wiscasset, Wayne Leeman of Woolwich, John Sutter II of Wiscasset and Kenneth Sutter and wife Le of Tacoma, Wash.; daughters, Judy Wilbur of Wiscasset, Evelyn Mull and husband John of Toledo, Ohio, Sally Doray of Hinsdale, N.H. and Joan Sutter of Wiscasset; brother, James Sutter and wife Jean of Wiscasset; sister, Eleanor Lesley and husband Lylle of Akron, Ohio; many grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Woolwich, with Masonic and Military Honors.
