John Edward Harrigan Jr. EdD, 85, of Portland, died July 12 at Maine Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Portland, March 20, 1926, the son of John Edward and Margaret Stella (Clark) Harrigan.
Dr. Harrigan, a Marine in WWII, taught at the University of Maine in Farmington (1974-84), and practiced psychology in Portland (1984-89). In retirement he sailed the east coast. At 70 years old he built a cabin in Whitefield where he lived until the age of 84.
Survivors include sons and daughters, Sharn and wife Wanda of Oklahoma, Lee of Portland, Leslee Pierce and husband Jeffrey of Saco, Johnna Sheaffer and husband Lester of Whitefield and Anne and partner Michael Lagasse of Bath; grandchildren, Becci Porterfield of Oklahoma, Jessica Hopkins of Saco, Brett and Chase Pierce of Saco and Kayla Sheaffer of Whitefield; and two great-grandchildren.
A private family burial is planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Veteran’s Home Speech Therapy Department in Scarborough.
