John Emerson Curtis, 60, of Damariscotta, died unexpectedly on Aug. 26 at Miles Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Damariscotta on March 18, 1947.
Attending schools in Damariscotta, John graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1965, and went on to earn his BS Degree in marketing from Husson College in 1972. After graduating from college, he spent several years working as a store manager for Deering Ice Cream in Portland before returning to his hometown of Damariscotta to become owner of John E. Curtis, Painting and Decorating, for 35 years.
From 1968-1970, John served honorably in the U.S. Army, serving much of that time in Germany.
John remained active in his home community throughout his life. He was a charter board member of CLC YMCA in Damariscotta, current board member and past King Lion of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club, member of the Board of Trustees at Lincoln Academy for 12 years and an honorary lifetime trustee, and a member of the Wells-Hussey Post American Legion.
John was an avid golfer and a member of Wawenock Golf Club, playing every Wednesday night in the men’s league and in as many tournaments as possible.
He was predeceased by his father, Chester Curtis.
Survivors include his wife, Ginny D. Curtis of Damariscotta; daughter, Andrea L. (Curtis) White of Woodstock; son-in-law, John A. White; grandson, Allen John White; four-footed family, Jack, Genie, Lucy, Sugar and Misty; siblings, Jane L. (Curtis) Hopkins of Tampa, Fla., Kathie A. Curtis of Walpole, Mary S. (Curtis) Dodge and husband Douglas of Walpole, Chester R. Curtis, Jr. and wife Brenda of Virginia, Beth A. (Curtis) Drake and husband Steve of Nobleboro, Danny L. Curtis and wife Caroline of Seattle, Wash., and Annette (Curtis) Foster of Licking, Mo.; mother, Marguerite (Soule) Curtis; nephews, Justin Drake and wife Megan and their children, Anna and Corbin, Jason Drake and wife Alice, Adam and Andrew Curtis, Nicholas, Nathan and Christopher Curtis, DJ Foster, Stephen Foster and wife Victoria; and nieces, Amber Foster and Kristen Dodge.
Friends are invited to be with the family 6-8 p.m., Tues., Aug. 28 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
Service to celebrate and honor John’s life 10 a.m., Wed., Aug. 29 at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, with Pastor Rick Newell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter or the Animal Shelter of choice.
