John Faulstich, 80, of Topsham and Nobleboro, passed away in the early morning of Aug. 31 at Cadigan Lodge of The Highlands in Topsham. His wife and children were nearby as he finished his 18-month battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 11, 1937.
Originally from Chicago, he grew up in Chicago and Hammond, Ind. and attended Elmhurst College. After graduating in 1958 he earned a Master of Divinity from Yale in 1961. He married Janet Tuttle in 1960.
John served as Minister of Education and Youth at the Garden City (N.Y.) Community Church (1961-1969), where he was active in promoting civil rights and social justice. He continued his activities pursuing peaceful solutions to social issues as minister of the First Reformed Church in Somerville, N.J., where he helped initiate a reconciliation with the Second Reformed Church, forming the United Reformed Church.
He became Dean of Student Affairs for Rutgers University at Newark, N.J. in 1973. During his 25-year tenure he was instrumental in establishing a sense of campus community and mutual respect and trust between students and administration.
John and his family have spent their summers on Pemaquid Pond in Nobleboro since 1966. John has been involved with the Pemaquid Watershed Association, the Audubon Loon Count and The Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. At The Highlands John was involved in The Highlands Chorale, the Welcoming Committee, and served as a resident representative on The Highlands Residents Association Board of Directors.
John Faulstich is survived by wife, Janet Faulstich; children, Alyce Brady, Beth Anne Stork, and Paul Stuart Faulstich; and grandchildren, Lauren Brady, Allen Stork, Karl Stork, Glenn Stork, Maya Faulstich, and Anna Faulstich.
