John Joseph “Joe” Kindred III, 83, of Pemaquid, passed away at LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta on Sept. 19. He was born on March 30, 1931 to John J. Kindred II and Katherine Carrier in Forest Hills, N.Y.
Joe grew up in Queens, N.Y. He contracted polio at the age of three, which led to a lifelong passion for Joe to eradicate polio in the world. He went to college at Washington & Lee, and graduated from University of Virginia Law School.
Joe worked as a trust officer for Manufacturers Hanover Trust in New York (Chase Bank), for over 30 years until he retired in the early 1990s. He was a member of many different groups, including the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club in Damariscotta. Joe was a very active member of the Rotary Club and served on various committees including the Rotary Foundation, whose main program is Polio Plus, a worldwide program to wipe out polio. Joe was very passionate about eliminating polio and led his club to a 100 per cent contribution by its club members every year. Joe was very active in Rotary on the District Level as well. Many of the club members received Paul Harris Fellowships because of Joe’s efforts to raise money for the Rotary Foundation. He was also a member and trustee of the Hagedon Trust.
In his spare time, Joe loved to grill and cook. He enjoyed using different marinades in his grilling, and he liked to preserve his harvest of fruits and vegetables. One of his favorite things to can was dilly beans. In addition, Joe enjoyed photography and had his own dark room. He took trips specifically to enjoy this hobby, and he loved traveling as well.
Joe spent most of his life at Twilight Park in Haines Falls, N.Y. Many generations of Joe’s family spent wonderful days in this cottage community. Joe was a member of the hiking committee in Twilight Park. He lived in Twilight Park for a couple years after he retired. He first met his future wife, Ann Burnham, in Twilight Park.
Joe was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Decker.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Ann-Dee Burnham of Pemaquid; daughter, Drewry Kindred of New York, N.Y.; and sister, Ann Collins of Greenwich, Conn.
