John M. Conley, 60, of South China, died May 16 at Victorian Villa in Canton.
He was born in Rockland on June 8, 1948, a son of Edward M. and Elizabeth (May) Conley.
In 1966 he graduated from Waldoboro High School and attended Machias College for two years. He entered the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War. After being discharge he returned to college and taught school for a few years. He then re-enlisted in the army serving in Desert Storm and retired after 27 years of service in 1998. After retirement he was employed as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at Amenity Manor in Topsham and then at Togus Veterans Hospital in Augusta.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Waldoboro, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Disabled American Vets and the National Rifle Association.
His great love was his three cats and his two dogs.
He is survived by two brothers, David Conley of Portland and Carroll “Butch” French, Jr. and longtime companion Rebeca Coombs of Bath; sister, Susan M. Murray and longtime companion Jim Seigars, Jr. of Wiscasset; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service 9 a.m., Thurs., May 28 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta with military honors.
