John P. Lincoln, 77, of Damariscotta, and former longtime resident of Newcastle, passed away on Sept. 2 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta after a long illness.
He was born on Nov. 12, 1929 in Newcastle, the son of E. Joshua and Lillian (Vernon) Lincoln.
A 1948 graduate of Lincoln Academy, he entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served honorably during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he began his career at the Nash Telephone Company as a lineman and later became a switchman when they became Tidewater Telephone Co. He remained in that position until he retired.
A very quiet man, John gave generously to the needs and causes of the local area. Following the death of his father, he moved back to the family home in Newcastle to help care for his mother.
He was a member of the Bunker Hill Grange in Jefferson. Back over the years, he was a member of the Atom Busters, a musical Jug Band and singing group that performed at other granges and local shows. John had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed singing the old songs and hymns up until his passing. He was also a longtime member of the Lincoln Pomona Grange and was a passionate member of the Wells-Hussey Post American Legion.
John was predeceased by his parents, and two sisters, Eleanor Lincoln Dow and Norma Lincoln Leeman.
He leaves two brothers, Edward Lincoln, Jr. and wife Barbara of Newcastle, and Austin Lincoln of Edgecomb; sister, Nancy Lincoln Baldwin of Somerville, Mass.; special cousin, Anna Lincoln Flood and husband Gardiner of Wiscasset; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service to honor John 11 a.m., Sat., Sept. 8 at the Chapel of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta with Pastor Rick Newell officiating.
He will be laid to rest at the Lincoln Cemetery in Newcastle.
