John R. Ruppert, 77, of Edgecomb, passed away on Feb. 10 at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born on May 4, 1932, he was the son of John and Mary (Barna) Ruppert.
John grew up in New Jersey where he attended, and graduated from, local schools there. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served aboard a destroyer during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
In 1956, he married Alice Shirley Baluk. The couple would move throughout the northeast as John worked as an electrical engineer for various companies in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. In 1973 they started building their home in Edgecomb and the couple moved to that house full time in 1979. John continued working and eventually retired from Central Maine Power in 1997.
John had a lifelong love of photography as well as sailing. He and his wife had a boat of some sort wherever they lived. In recent years, he took up golf, which he enjoyed very much.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ruppert of Edgecomb; sons, John and wife Rebecca of Brunswick, and Mark of Freeport; grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica, both of Waldoboro; brother, Robert of New Jersey; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
