John Robert MacDonald, a longtime resident of Jefferson, passed away Jan. 21 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
He was born in Pittston at Kate Morse’s Hospital, now Stratton Manor, on Oct. 6, 1921, the son of John and Katherine (MacMillan) MacDonald.
After graduating from Cony High School in 1939, he enjoyed the freedom of working for himself by raising Durham cattle and working in his woodlots with his horses. He knew many of the old ways of farming and horse care and generously shared his vast knowledge with others.
As a young man, he was known for his dancing skill and attended many of the local dances, never lacking for partners.
He was a trustee of Jefferson Highland Cemetery for many years and a member of the Jefferson Historical Society. His interest in local history and his excellent memory of past events resulted in his recording local happenings and personalities for the historical society. After 70 years of perfect health, he was stricken by transverse mylitis and confined to a wheelchair thereafter.
He was predeceased by his brother, Judge Paul MacDonald; and sister, Ruth Small.
He is survived by his nephew, Major Glenn MacDonald, USAR (Ret.) of Chandler, Ariz.; niece, Faith Clark of Rome, N.Y.; one grandniece and two grandnephews.
John Robert will be sadly missed by his many friends and acquaintances for his good humor and intelligence.
As per his wishes, there will be no services. After cremation, he will be buried beside his parents in Jefferson Highland Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
