Capt. Jonathan H. Doane, 67, of Southport, passed away Aug. 2 at MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta.
He was born Aug. 12, 1943 in Framingham, Mass., the son of the late Henry M. and Isabelle J. Conkline Doane. At the age of six he and his family moved to Maine where he attended local schools and graduated from Berwick Academy. After graduating, he served four years with the U.S. Navy, later transferring to the Merchant Marines and retired as a sea captain in 2005, after 21 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 31, Hampton, Va. and the Huntoon Hill Grange. He loved to be on the water rowing, was a gun enthusiast and was a competitive shooter, loved to garden and was known to have a green thumb, enjoyed chopping wood, carpentry, restoration of furniture and loved dogs.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Burno Doane of Southport; sons, Troy A. Doane of Hampton, Va. and Christopher Garnett of Ottawa, Ia.; daughters, Elizabeth Burno of Portsmouth, Va. and Tamika Faulkner and husband Charlie of Hampton, Va.; sister, Rachel Doane of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Jamal Johnson, Elantra Garnett-Small, Caleyah Garnett; faithful companion, Oliver ED, the Bassett Hound; and many cousins.
Memorial service 1 p.m., Mon., Aug. 8 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay.
